MAGIC AND GOLD. An exhibition about traditional and author jewelry in Salamanca and province.

Jewelry is basically a complement to the dress. Traditional jewelry is, therefore, a complement to the popular costume, both the feminine, which accompany necklaces, earrings, bracelets or rings, as well as the masculine, because here it is present in the buttons -mainly silver-, which are sewn in different garments that the man wears. Most of this jewelry is made using the filigree technique, used in both gold and silver crafts and is a characteristic attested in all the Salamancan regions. But popular jewelry does not only have an ornamental sense but also has a marked religious meaning, being in the costume of views of La Alberca where this character is best exemplified. Special mention deserves, when we talk about traditional jewelry of religious sign, the one that accompanies the clothing of children and that has an eminently prophylactic sense in a context in which the infant mortality was so high. Magic and gold arises as a tribute to José María Velasco, last representative of a family saga dedicated to jewelry, who will donate, when he retires, in 2017, the machinery and tools of his workshop to the Museum of Commerce.
