Ieronimus. Towers of the Cathedral
1 hour
Ieronimus is the Latin name of Don Jerónimo de Périgueux (1060?-1120), one of the most famous Spanish bishops of French origin, key figure of the Reconquista, chaplain of Cid Campeador and bishop of Valencia, who was assigned to Salamanca when the diocese was reestablished in 1102, in the days of its Christian repopulation by Count Raymond of Burgundy and Doña Urraca.
The Cathedral Towers are one of the most important symbols of Salamanca. From a distance, they define their profile, the horizon; and up close, with its 110 meters high, dominate the city. A tour of its interior offers the opportunity to know the history of its construction, delving into its 900 years of art and history through the documentary exhibition "Ieronimus". A tour of the towers of the cathedral, between battlements, pinnacles and gargoyles, allows you to contemplate the Old Cathedral and its wonderful altarpiece; the New Cathedral from its triforium; the city from a privileged position; and the vega of the Tormes River. A unique perspective, a true discovery and a new contribution of the Cathedral to the city.

From the ground to the Chamber of the Bell, through various rooms, passageways, terraces and viewpoints.
Dungeon Room. This is the first room of the tour of the Towers of the Cathedral. Formerly the prison chamber, it was completely inaccessible from the outside. The door was opened in 1614 to allow access to the towers to the staff of the Cathedral, who made it part of their quarters.
Jailer's room. This small room possibly served as a guard room for the dungeon, hence its name. Before the restoration, this room housed a toilet used by the families who lived in the Tower. It is located halfway between the staircase that leads to the interior of the Old Cathedral and the staircase that goes down to the Hall of Dungeons.
