Our Neighborhoods

A stroll through Salamanca's historic center can be complemented by a visit to its surrounding neighborhoods, which also boast considerable appeal. Barrio del Oeste: A place of activity, art, and community involvement. It features an urban art route: La Galería Urbana (The Urban Gallery), which has transformed Barrio del Oeste into an open-air art gallery, accessible 24 hours a day, every day of the year. This neighborhood boasts 504 garage doors, over 100 of which have been artistically transformed since spring 2013, showcasing and demonstrating the work of young artists. Don't miss a stroll through the Barrio del Oeste's Urban Gallery! The neighborhood also features several rationalist buildings, very alternative shops and bars, and above all, a lively atmosphere in its streets.

Urban Gallery

Urban Art in Barrio del Oeste has forged a new reality, transforming the neighborhood into a more artistic, more cultural space, with art at street level, part of daily life; where garage doors, shop shutters, walls, building facades, and urban furniture serve as canvases. Thus creating an Urban Gallery open 24 hours a day, every day of the year!

Barrio de San Cristóbal-Las Claras:

Around the urban thoroughfare of Gran Vía, we find another interesting route with stops at the Convento de las Claras, the Church of Sancti Espíritus, or the Filmoteca de Castilla y León (Castile and León Film Library). Barrio de San Vicente: This is where the city's first settlers established themselves, and today you can visit the archaeological site which preserves important remains from the Iron Age. Its elevated position offers fabulous views of the city's towers. Its buildings and streets bore witness to battles during the Peninsular War. The Tormes River, Orchards, and Gardens. Salamanca is greener than it appears, with parks, gardens, and orchards nestled within convents, churches, and palaces. These natural spaces can be explored through various guided tours, allowing visitors to observe the flora and fauna and witness the river's integration into city life. Unamuno in Salamanca Miguel de Unamuno was one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Spanish literature, an authentic thinker, poet, playwright, novelist, philosopher, and essayist. He was born in Bilbao in 1864, but in Salamanca, he found his spiritual homeland, where he lived and died. Unamuno is an integral part of our city's recent history; through his works, he made Salamanca more universal. Many sites linked to his figure can be visited in the city today: the house where he lived, the University where he served as rector, the places he frequented... These same locations served as the settings where director Alejandro Amenábar filmed “Mientras dure la guerra” (While at War), a work of fiction based on real events, the result of rigorous research. Most of the film's action takes place in Salamanca, and a significant part of the shooting occurred there. “Mientras dure la guerra” depicts life in the city during the summer of 1936. These are the most relevant places to visit today, some of which appear in the film, allowing you to follow Unamuno's footsteps in Salamanca.
