EXHIBITION ROOM OF SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CRUZ
45 minutes
The Santo Domingo de la Cruz Exhibition Hall opened its doors in 2002, after the rehabilitation of the old College of Santo Domingo de la Cruz. This school, founded in the sixteenth century by the Dukes of Béjar, was part of the Convent of the Dominicans and gave priority of entry to students from Andalusia. The building hosts temporary exhibitions by the Salmantine sculptor Venancio Blanco. In the gardens surrounding the exhibition hall, a permanent collection of works by the artist is shown, among which the sculptures of bulls and bullfighters stand out, as well as works of a religious nature, such as The Last Supper or The Christ Who Returns to the Father. During summer evenings, the gardens are transformed into an ideal setting for outdoor concerts, adding an additional appeal to this historic space.
The Santo Domingo de la Cruz Exhibition Hall is a cultural space that was inaugurated in 2002, on the occasion of the declaration of Salamanca as European Capital of Culture. It is located in the building and gardens of the old College of Santo Domingo de la Cruz, an institution founded in the 16th century and linked to the Convent of San Esteban.
Since 2014, thanks to a collaboration agreement between the City of Salamanca, the MAPFRE Foundation and the Venancio Blanco Foundation, this enclosure houses the headquarters of the Venancio Blanco Foundation, which hosts both temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection of works by the renowned Salmantino sculptor.
The Exhibition Hall of Santo Domingo has a workshop of the Venancio Blanco Foundation in which activities of drawing, engraving, sculpture, binding and mixed techniques are taught, all with an approach that encourages creativity and sustainability.
The Sala Santo Domingo and its gardens have established themselves as a cultural reference in Salamanca. With free admission, this space allows you to enjoy art and nature in a relaxed atmosphere, where visitors can stroll through the garden admiring the sculptures of Venancio Blanco that are harmoniously integrated into the environment. During the summer, the Plazas y Patios program transforms the venue into a stage that hosts outdoor concerts. The combination of music, nature and breathtaking views of the illuminated Cathedral creates a unique atmosphere, offering citizens an unforgettable cultural experience.
Salamanca, apart from the works exhibited here, has a large representation of his works spread over squares and gardens, with sculptures as emblematic as the monument to the Cowboy Charro in the Plaza de España, the medallion of King Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía in the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca or the sculpture of San Francisco de Asís in the Campo de San Francisco.
