SALAMANCA WALLS INTERPRETATION CENTER

45 minutes
Salmantica Sedes Anticua Castrorum is an interpretation center where in situ remains of two of the defensive enclosures the city had are preserved: the wall from the protohistoric period (4th century BC) and the first medieval wall (12th century).

This space allows us to journey through the history and the warlike events in which the city was immersed throughout its long history. All these historical processes are explained through panels, audiovisuals, and interactive screens. The tour begins with the first occupation of the city on the Cerro de San Vicente (San Vicente Hill) and ends with the various episodes linked to the Peninsular War (War of Independence). Both moments allow us to understand what the walls of the pre-Roman castro were like in the 4th century BC; the siege by the Carthaginian general Hannibal; the evolution of the two medieval walls and their demolition in the 19th century.

Salmantica Castrorum is the space where the city invites visitors to travel to its origins through its defenses. This interpretation center explains how the city was born and evolved, from the first pre-Roman settlements to the consolidation of the medieval city.

Inside, thematic panels, recreations, and audiovisual resources allow understanding how the urban landscape was transformed and what role the walls played in protecting the city throughout the centuries. The tour shows the structure of the defenses, the materials used, the construction techniques, and the strategic importance of this enclave located next to the Tormes.

In addition, the center highlights the relationship between the wall and urban growth, showing how the city expanded over the centuries. All this makes Salmantica Castrorum an ideal visit for those who wish to discover the origins of Salamanca and understand the origin of its historical layout.

Visits can be made individually by following the information on the signs and interactive screens. Audioguides and texts with information in braille are available. Guided tours and archaeological workshops for schoolchildren are also held at certain times.
