CELESTINA'S VIEWPOINT

30 minutes
The Huerto offers stunning views of Salamanca Cathedral, earning it a prominent place on the city's Viewpoints Route. The lush vegetation that surrounds it makes it an ideal place for a stroll, reading, or simply being captivated by the magical atmosphere evoked by the literary work.

Located in the heart of Salamanca's old town, behind the Cathedral and a few steps from Patio Chico, the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea is a municipal garden of approximately 2,500 square meters. Its name recalls the protagonists of La Celestina, Fernando de Rojas' immortal work, as local tradition places the setting of the romantic encounter between Calixto and Melibea in this spot.

In the heart of Salamanca's historic quarter, behind the Cathedral and built on the remains of the ancient medieval wall, lies the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea, a garden corner full of symbolism. Its name pays homage to the protagonists of La Celestina, Fernando de Rojas' famous work, as tradition places the scene of the romantic encounter between Calixto and Melibea here.

Access is at the end of Calle del Arcediano. Before crossing the gate, to the left, we are welcomed by a sculpture dedicated to La Celestina, by the Salamanca sculptor Agustín Casillas, who managed to reflect in the old woman's face, tired and deeply wrinkled, the ravages of her difficult life. The stone pedestal displays a relief of Calixto and Melibea, accompanied by a quote from the work: «I am an old woman as God made me, no worse than any other. Whether I live well or badly, God is the witness of my heart». To the right is the Casa de la Calera, converted into a Hostel for pilgrims walking the Vía de la Plata towards Santiago de Compostela.

The Huerto was acquired by the Salamanca City Council in 1981, with the purpose of transforming it into a public garden. The restoration sought to recreate a medieval atmosphere, with a certain romantic air, evoking the imaginary garden in which the lovers' story unfolds. In 1992, the so-called Jardín del Visir was added, named after its previous owner's nickname. It has an area of 2,300 m2, where a varied and abundant vegetation is distributed, as well as different architectural elements harmoniously arranged throughout the surroundings, making the garden one of the most charming places in the city, ideal for rest, reading, or simply enjoying the rustling of leaves and the singing of birds.

Located on the wall, its height offers magnificent views of the city. When night falls and the city lights up, the spectacle becomes simply unforgettable.

As in the rest of the viewpoints on this route, there is a support for taking photographs with mobile devices. Through a simple QR code system, visitors can quickly capture their photos and share them on social media, becoming the city's best promoters.
