Patio de Escuelas

20 minutes
A small square that opens up in front of the Plateresque facade of the Major Schools Building of the University in Salamanca, housing several of this institution's original areas.
The square was built between 1609 and 1611, by royal authorization from Philip III and according to the project presented by Juan Gallo de Andrada, allowing for a better view of the monuments.
It is a quadrangular square where the facades of the University's historic buildings are located: the Major Schools, the Minor Schools, and the Study Hospital. Other buildings in the square include the Casa de los Doctores de la Reina (which houses the Salamanca Museum) and the Casa de los Gatos.
In its center stands a statue of Fray Luis de León, by Nicasio Sevilla, erected in 1869 by popular subscription and inspired by the figure of Aristotle in Raphael's School of Athens.
On the walls of this courtyard, one can still see the crimson Vítor inscriptions that celebrated students' doctorates and are so closely linked to the traditions of this institution. Originally painted with bull's blood, they symbolize the victory of the newly graduated doctors over books.
