CENTRO DOCUMENTAL DE LA MEMORIA HISTORICA. MASONIC LODGE

45 minutes
The General Archive of the Civil War is located on Calle Gibraltar in Salamanca. It occupies a Baroque building, constructed in the 18th century by architect Joaquín de Churriguera to house foundlings. State-owned, it was created in 1999, later becoming part of the Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica. Inside, it safeguards the most important collection of documents from the period between 1936 and 1978. It features a permanent exhibition on the Spanish Civil War and Spanish Freemasonry.
The General Archive of the Spanish Civil War, located on Calle Gibraltar in Salamanca, has been part of the Centro Documental de la Memoria Histórica since 2007; it is overseen by the Ministry of Education.

This archive occupies the building of the former San José Hospital, constructed in the 18th century by Joaquín de Churriguera as a home for foundlings. In the early twentieth century, it became the Colegio de San Ambrosio, where education was offered to young people with limited resources. During the Civil War, the building was used to house Franco's Moroccan Guard and, subsequently, as a depository for documents seized from the Republican faction. Currently, the building combines its function as an archive and document repository with a permanent exhibition on the Civil War and Freemasonry.

It presents a wide variety of documents about the Civil War, including political propaganda; life on the battlefield and in the rear; foreign intervention in the conflict; exile and repression. In the rooms dedicated to Freemasonry, visitors can see documents, Masonic symbols, and objects used in their rituals and ceremonies. Furthermore, a meeting room of a Masonic lodge has been recreated, where an audio guide describes the meaning of the exhibited objects.

The visit is complemented by the screening of two videos. One of them explains the origin of the documents and the formation of the archive, while the other addresses the history of Freemasonry in Spain.
