DA2 (DOMUS ARTIUM 2002)

1 hour 30 minutes
The Domus Artium 2002 (DA2) is a municipal contemporary art center managed by the Salamanca City of Culture and Knowledge Foundation. It was inaugurated in 2002 on the occasion of Salamanca's designation as European Capital of Culture.

Conceived as an avant-garde space, the DA2 hosts projects by both internationally renowned artists and young creators. The museum has its own collection and also houses the collection of the Coca-Cola Spain Foundation, both disseminated through temporary exhibitions. Its program pays special attention to contemporary art and new technologies, offering a journey through the artistic evolution of recent decades and allowing an analysis of the aesthetic and creative contrasts between different generations.

The building, located in the former provincial prison, was renovated and extended by architect Horacio Fernández del Castillo. His intervention creates a dialogue between its penitentiary past and its current function as a museum. This rehabilitation was recognized with the Regional Restoration Award and the ARPA award from the Association of Architectural Heritage Restorers.

Domus Artium 2002 (DA2) is a contemporary art center located in Salamanca. It occupies the building of the old provincial prison, built in 1930 and subsequently transformed into an art center by the architect Horacio Fernández del Castillo. Its location, in the Aldehuela area —an industrial area far from the historic center— is part of an urban regeneration project that sought to recover degraded spaces and provide them with new cultural uses. The creation of DA2, together with the nearby Center for Performing Arts and Music (CAEM), has contributed to revitalizing this environment and expanding the city's cultural and tourist offerings.

Since its opening, DA2 has focused on the dissemination of the most current contemporary art, especially on works produced since the 1990s, and on promoting emerging artists from Salamanca and Castilla y León. In recent years, the center has strengthened its commitment to video art and new audiovisual languages, adapting its rooms to host this type of proposal and making it a regular presence within its programming.

The museum combines individual exhibitions by established national and international artists with shows dedicated to young creators and emerging talents from the region. In addition, it organizes one or two major collective exhibitions each year —such as Eat or not to eat, Children, Don't call it performance, Remakes, or The hell of beauty— which address contemporary themes from multiple perspectives and encourage public reflection.

DA2's activity is not limited to exhibitions. Its program includes concerts, performing arts shows, short film and video art cycles, design-related activities, dance proposals, performances, and urban events such as the Graffity Party.

The center also carries out important educational work in collaboration with institutions such as the University of Salamanca and the Ministry of Education of Castilla y León. It participates in educational projects aimed at schoolchildren, adolescents, and teachers, and organizes guided tours adapted to different audiences, including specific programs to bring contemporary art closer to older people.
