The building
The north facade, accessed via Gibraltar Street, is the sole example of Art Nouveau in the city of Salamanca. The ensemble, comprising a two-tiered facade, courtyard, and railing, is of great simplicity. The first floor and the railings are decorated following the influences of Belgian Art Nouveau, while the wooden door, set within a low arch, features floral and aquatic motifs highlighted in relief.

The south facade, which faces the river and receives light for most of the day, is a spectacular combination of classicism and modernity. Above the stone wall, two iron and glass galleries are situated, with a central staircase that bifurcates towards a large open terrace.

The use of iron, a construction material of the era, in both the south facade and the central courtyard, imbued with expressive nuances, provides an innovative design that transcends mere structural function. This is exemplified in the openwork of the spandrels of the portico arches, in the wrought ironwork of the bay windows, and in the slender cast-iron columns from Moneo's workshop.

The central courtyard features lintelled galleries supported by cast-iron columns. On the lower floor, the Art Nouveau decoration of the door stuccoes and continuous friezes stands out. On the upper floor of the gallery, the decoration of the wrought ironwork and the representation of the fleur-de-lis, in honor of the promoter's surname, is noteworthy.

While the initial conception of the courtyard, when the building was used as a family home, was an open patio, it is currently enclosed by a leaded stained-glass window created by the Catalan artist Juan Villaplana, based on a design by Manuel Ramos Andrade. The stained glass primarily utilizes a wide range of colors to depict the sky, clouds, moon, and stars.

Casa Lis today boasts other stained-glass windows in its windows, in the galleries of the south facade, or in the central staircase's skylight, which lend the building an even more attractive and authentic chromatic richness for its era. Ultimately, the stained-glass windows are now yet another collection of artworks within the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Déco.

To become a museum, Casa Lis had many different occupants, passing through various tenants and owners until, once abandoned and ruined, it could be expropriated by the first democratic city councils, destined to be a Casa de Cultura and undertaking the necessary investments to recover it and restore it to its current splendor. Subsequently, with the donation by Manuel Ramos Andrade of his Art Déco and Art Nouveau collection to the city, the museum dedicated to these artistic styles was established in this building.
