JARDÍN DE LA MERCED

20 minutes
The Jardín de la Merced, located on the Teso de las Catedrales and close to the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Salamanca, owes its name to the Mercedarian Convent that stood on this site until Mendizábal's Confiscation. Situated atop the historic medieval wall, the garden offers spectacular views of the Tormes River, the iconic Roman Bridge, and the vast lands to the south of the province. This space was inaugurated in 1974.
The Jardín de la Merced is located on the western side of the Teso de las Catedrales, very close to the Peña Celestina Viewpoint and the Minor Schools. Although it does not hold the category of a historic garden, having been inaugurated in 1974, its location is deeply steeped in history. Until the 19th century, this area was home to convents, major colleges, and colleges of military orders. All of them were masterpieces of Spanish art that disappeared with the Peninsular War and the Confiscation. Today, it is a modern university district where the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics, and the Abraham Zacut Library are located.

From its viewpoint, one can admire the most impressive views of the river, the Roman Bridge, and the neighborhoods situated south of the Tormes River. Facing us, on the Teso de la Feria, stands the modern building of the National Parador. As a majestic backdrop, towards the south of the province, we see the Sierra de Béjar.

This garden is a peaceful and secluded spot, much frequented by university students. During the city's festivities, it transforms into a splendid viewpoint for watching the fireworks.
