THE CELESTINA VIEWPOINT

30 minutes
Located in the heart of Salamanca's old town, behind the Cathedral and a few steps from Patio Chico, the Calixto and Melibea's Garden (Huerto de Calixto y Melibea) is a municipal garden of approximately 2,500 square meters. Its name recalls the protagonists of La Celestina, Fernando de Rojas' immortal work, as local tradition places the setting of the romantic encounter between Calixto and Melibea in this spot.

The Garden offers stunning views of Salamanca Cathedral, which has earned it a prominent place on the city's Viewpoints Route. The lush vegetation surrounding it makes it an ideal place to stroll, read, or simply be captivated by the magical atmosphere evoked by the literary work.
In the heart of Salamanca's historic quarter, behind the Cathedral and over the route of the ancient medieval wall, lies the Calixto and Melibea's Garden (Huerto de Calixto y Melibea), a landscaped corner full of symbolism. Its name pays homage to the protagonists of La Celestina, the famous work by Fernando de Rojas, as tradition places the setting of the romantic encounter between Calixto and Melibea here.

Access is found at the end of Calle del Arcediano. Before crossing the gate, to the left, a sculpture dedicated to La Celestina welcomes us, a work by the Salamancan sculptor Agustín Casillas, who managed to reflect in the old woman's face, tired and furrowed by deep wrinkles, the ravages of her difficult life. The stone pedestal displays a relief of Calixto and Melibea, accompanied by a quote extracted from the work: «I am an old woman as God made me, no worse than any other. Whether I live well or badly, God is the witness of my heart». To the right is the Casa de la Calera, converted into a hostel for pilgrims traveling the Vía de la Plata towards Santiago de Compostela.

The Garden was acquired by the Salamanca City Council in 1981, with the purpose of transforming it into a public garden. The restoration sought to recreate a medieval atmosphere, with a certain romantic air, evoking the imaginary garden where the lovers' story takes place. In 1992, the so-called Vizier's Garden (Jardín del Visir) was added, named after its previous owner's nickname. It has an area of 2,300 m2 where varied and abundant vegetation is distributed, as well as different architectural elements harmoniously arranged throughout the environment, making the garden one of the most charming places in the city, ideal for rest, reading, or simply enjoying the rustling of leaves and the singing of birds.

Located on the wall, its height offers magnificent views of the city. When night falls and the city lights up, the spectacle becomes simply unforgettable.
