History and Origins
The area now occupied by the square was originally part of the ancient "Huerta de San Esteban," owned by the Dominicans of the adjacent convent. With the city's growth, the area was urbanized in the early 20th century. The square's name and the central statue honor the Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus, whose connection to Salamanca is notable, as he met here with the University's scholars to defend his project of reaching the Indies by sailing west.
