20 minutes
The Plaza de la Libertad in Salamanca, a space with a rich history and various transformations, is located next to the iconic Casa del Cordón. Originally, it was known as the Plaza del Mercado Mayor and was much larger than its current size, connecting with the Plaza de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Plaza Mayor.
The Plaza de la Libertad in Salamanca is a public square located near the Plaza Mayor, known for its history and atmosphere. Originally, it was part of the grounds of the Discalced Carmelite convent. After the Mendizábal disentailment in 1821, the land passed into state hands and became a public square in 1863. It was later landscaped, and a column was erected in homage to the Battle of Arapiles and the Revolution of '68. During the Franco dictatorship, it was named Plaza de Onésimo Redondo, but it regained its original name of Libertad in 1979, with the advent of democracy.
