Cathedral

1 hour
The Salamanca Cathedral complex offers visitors a unique treasure of nine centuries of history and religious art, which can be explored in perfect continuity. The Cathedral is a fundamental part of the city of Salamanca, a World Heritage Site, without which it is impossible to truly understand it.

The Old Cathedral

Dedicated to Santa María de la Sede, it was built throughout the 12th and 13th centuries. It features a three-nave basilica plan with a transept developed in both plan and height, forming a Latin cross. Romanesque in its overall construction, the building is topped with vaults transitioning to Gothic. Among the master builders who directed the work, documents preserved in the Cathedral Archive mention the following: Florín de Pituenga, Casandro Romano, Alvar García, Pedro de la Obra, Juan el Pedrero, Sancho Pedro, Juan Franco, and Petrus Petri.

The Main Portal Although it has lost part of its original artistic value after extensive 17th-century renovations due to severe deterioration of its elements, its interior preserves two statues flanking the entrance, depicting the scene of the Annunciation.

The Church Layout It measures 52 meters long, 9.20 meters wide, and 16.70 meters high; the side aisles are 50 x 5.50 x 11.20 meters respectively. The three apses of the Main Chapel and side chapels correspond to these in logical proportion.

The Central Nave It showcases a moment of transition to Gothic, being covered with pointed arches and ribbed vaults, resting on supports originally designed to hold a pointed barrel vault with transverse arches. This necessitated the eventual introduction of other elements, such as corbels on which the ribs rest, to adequately accommodate the new solution. The capitals and ledges are decorated with figures of biblical characters, animals, vegetal motifs, and mascarons. The statue-ribs located above the corbels of the vault are unique examples that stand out in the interior of the Old Church.

The New Cathedral

The New Cathedral, built adjoining the Old one, began construction in 1513 and was inaugurated in August 1733. The Catholic Monarchs participated in its initial promotion, at the request of the Cathedral Chapter, which, along with successive bishops, always acted as the principal patron.

Among the great master architects who directed the works for nearly two and a half centuries are Juan and Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, Juan de Álava, Juan Setién Güemes, Pantaleón Pontón, the Churriguera brothers, and Juan de Sagarbinaga. Construction began in Late Gothic style, and although it incorporates some later styles, it maintained a stylistic unity in this art until the end, imposed and desired by the Chapter. It is a church with a rectangular plan, composed of three naves and niche chapels between buttresses. It is covered by ribbed vaults with tiercerons and liernes, drawing complex and beautiful star-shaped designs, in which the keystones particularly shine. At the crossing, a magnificent lantern tower rises, formed by an octagonal body on pendentives with monumental reliefs of Marian mysteries, surmounted by a luminous cylindrical drum made bright by wide windows and a hemispherical dome. On the exterior, it culminates in a false lantern; it was completed by Juan Sagarbinaga in 1765.

The Church receives light from nearly a hundred stained-glass windows, those depicting biblical episodes originally coming from Flanders. Its walls also feature two continuous galleries, at two levels, numerous medallions with busts of prophets, evangelists, figures from the Holy Scriptures, and Doctors of the Church, as well as many cathedral coats of arms with the lily vase motif.
