VIEWPOINT OF THE IRISH

20 minutes
The Mirador de los Irlandeses (Irishmen's Viewpoint) is located in the western part of Salamanca's historic center, on Cuesta de la Independencia. It is part of the emblematic Viewpoints Route and offers one of the most impressive views of Salamanca's historic quarter.

From this privileged spot, the majestic domes and towers of the Iglesia de la Purísima, La Clerecía, and the Cathedral stand out. At sunset, especially on summer evenings, the viewpoint transforms into a magical setting where the sunlight dyes the monuments, built with Villamayor stone, a reddish color. And when night falls, the city's illumination turns this corner into the perfect balcony to admire Salamanca in all its splendor.

The name of this viewpoint pays tribute to the Irish College, an educational institution founded in the 16th century to welcome the Irish community in Spain. Known as the Royal College of Saint Patrick of Irish Nobles, it was established in the city in 1592 with the aim of educating young Irish Catholics who were fleeing religious persecution in their country. The collegians wore a black cassock and a red 'beca' (a type of academic sash), which is why the people of Salamanca affectionately called them “pavitos” (little turkeys).

It was the Irish students who introduced the sport of football to the city. Their extensive presence in Salamanca and the strong bonds of friendship with Salamancan society mean that they are still remembered with affection and respect. Today, the City Council commemorates their legacy every March 17th, Saint Patrick's Day, by illuminating the town hall facade with the colors of Ireland.

Their memory endures in the toponymy of the area, with spaces such as Plaza de los Irlandeses (Irish Square) and Calle de San Patricio (Saint Patrick's Street). Even today, many people from Salamanca continue to refer to Colegio Fonseca as “the Irish” due to their long stay there.

The enclave has been included in the City Viewpoints Route and offers one of the most impressive panoramic views of the urban landscape.

As dusk falls, the last rays of the sun light up the city's monuments, bathing them in a warm and evocative glow. If one waits a few more minutes, another privilege can be enjoyed: the arrival of night and the incomparable spectacle of seeing Salamanca illuminated, majestically unfolding before our eyes. As in the rest of the viewpoints on this route, there is a stand for taking self-portraits. Through a simple system of QR codes, visitors can quickly capture their photos and share them on social media, becoming the best promoters of the city.
