MIRADOR DEL PUENTE ROMANO

30 minutes
The image the spectator contemplates from this point represents the most characteristic profile of the city of Salamanca. Throughout the centuries, it has been the most reproduced and photographed panorama. In the foreground is the Puente Romano, while in the background the towers of the historic city stand out, crowned by the imposing silhouette of the Catedral Nueva. A selfie support and an interpretive panel allow visitors to identify the monuments visible from this location.
The Salamanca Viewpoint Route is an invitation to contemplate the city from surprising and captivating angles. Each viewpoint offers a unique perspective: some allow you to overlook the city from above; others, to see the Teso de las Catedrales in its full magnitude from the hills that flank it to the east and west; the viewpoints located on the south bank of the river show us the city's profile, framed by the river that has witnessed its evolution throughout the centuries.

The first impression one gets when approaching a city is its historic skyline, and Salamanca's appears dominated by the immense structure of the Catedral Nueva and by the towers and bell towers of its churches. Afterwards, when we stop to observe the city carefully from the south bank of the Tormes, its location is strikingly impressive. The historic city is situated on several sandstone hills that rise more than thirty meters above the river. On these hills, a succession of towers and buildings parade before our eyes: river, bridge, walls, housing, churches, convents, university, cathedrals. The entire history of the city is displayed before us.

Here is one of the most emblematic viewpoints of the route, that of the Puente Romano. This bridge, with its two thousand years of history, not only connects both banks of the river but also the past with the present. Observing the city from this viewpoint is to immerse oneself in the essence of Salamanca. The view towards the Catedral, especially at dusk, is breathtaking: the golden tones of the Villamayor stone are illuminated by the last rays of sun, creating an unforgettable image. And at night, with the city illuminated, the image is even more captivating; you will discover a unique, almost unreal city, where it is hard to believe that the hand of man could have created so much beauty.

The area around the Puente Romano is a very pleasant space; rich riparian vegetation extends along both banks of the river. Today it is a recreational area with sports courts, playgrounds, a cycle path, and green spaces that fill with young people and strollers. On Lunes de Aguas, both banks host a multitude of young people who come to celebrate this typical Salamanca festival by eating the traditional hornazo.
