JARDÍN DE LA MERCED

20 minutes
The Jardín de la Merced, located on the Teso de las Catedrales and close to the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Salamanca, owes its name to the Mercedarian Convent that stood on this site until Mendizábal's Confiscation. Situated atop the historic medieval wall, the garden offers spectacular views of the Tormes River, the iconic Roman Bridge, and the vast lands to the south of the province. This space was inaugurated in 1974.
The Merced Garden is located in the western part of the Teso de las Catedrales, very close to the Peña Celestina viewpoint and the Escuelas Menores. Although it does not hold the category of a historical garden, having been inaugurated in 1974, its location is deeply steeped in history. Until the 19th century, this area was home to convents, major colleges, and military order colleges. All of them were masterpieces of Spanish art that disappeared with the Peninsular War (Guerra de la Independencia) and the Desamortización (Disentailment). Today it is a modern university district where the Faculties of Science and Mathematics and the Abraham Zacut Library are located.

This garden is a quiet and welcoming space, frequently visited by university students looking for a place to rest or study outdoors. From its viewpoint, some of the most spectacular views of Salamanca can be enjoyed: the Tormes river, the Roman Bridge, and the neighborhoods located to the south.

Just opposite, on the Teso de la Feria, stands the modern building of the National Tourist Parador, perfectly integrated into the landscape. And as a backdrop, towards the south of the province, the immense silhouette of the Sierra de Béjar is outlined.
