BAROQUE ALTARPIECE OF LAS CLARAS

30 minutes
The origins of the Convent of Santa Clara date back to the 13th century. In 2019, due to a lack of vocations, the congregation of Poor Clares left the convent, which was transformed into a museum.

The church is decorated with seven Baroque altarpieces, notably the main altarpiece, created in the early 18th century by Joaquín de Churriguera and Pedro de Gamboa. It is a magnificent example of Salamancan Baroque, distinguished by its decorative richness and its harmonious adaptation to the temple's structure. Made of gilded wood with gold leaf, it presents a dynamic structure, organized around three sections separated by Solomonic columns covered with bunches of grapes and vine leaves, symbols of the Eucharist.

At the center is the tabernacle, under a baldachin, next to the image of Saint Clare with the monstrance, reinforcing the eucharistic message of the ensemble. Above it, in the attic, appears the Immaculate Conception, highlighted by the presence of angels directing the gaze towards her. The side sections house the figures of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Padua, completing a coherent and balanced iconographic program.

This altarpiece is part of the Salamanca Baroque Altarpiece Constellation Route, an artistic itinerary that invites rediscovering the splendor of Baroque art through the altarpieces preserved in eight temples of the city.
Under the name of Constellation of Salamanca Baroque Altarpieces, and with the aim of preserving and disseminating this valuable heritage, a tourist itinerary has been designed that visits eight churches in the city where these imposing works are kept. This tour invites visitors to immerse themselves in the splendor of Baroque art through some of Salamanca's most outstanding altarpieces.

Among the best-preserved examples are those created by the Churriguera brothers, whose work was decisive in the development of full Baroque, especially in its more decorative aspect. The magnificent altarpiece that José de Churriguera executed for the church of San Esteban stands out in particular. However, his brothers also left a notable mark: Alberto de Churriguera is the author of the altarpiece in the Chapel of Christ of the Battles in the New Cathedral, while Joaquín de Churriguera created those for the Chapel of Veracruz and the monastery of Las Claras.

The church of the Santa Clara monastery houses an exceptional collection of seven Baroque altarpieces, whose golden glow illuminates the interior of the temple. Among them, the main altarpiece stands out, commissioned in 1701 to Joaquín de Churriguera and Pedro de Gamboa, which, despite its smaller dimensions, maintains a close relationship with the one created by José de Churriguera for the church of San Esteban.
