CASTILE AND LEON FILM ARCHIVE

1 hour
The Filmoteca de Castilla y León is headquartered in a historic building popularly known as the Casa de las Viejas (House of the Old Women) or Colegio de la Caridad (Charity College). Its history dates back to the 17th century, when it was built by Bartolomé Caballero Torquemada, chaplain of the Royal Clergy of San Marcos. In his will, the founder bequeathed the house to be used as an asylum for widows, a function it maintained for centuries.

Long before housing film frames and movies, the building had such picturesque uses as an ice factory, an activity that coexisted with the asylum from the post-war period until the 1970s. After its rehabilitation, it became the headquarters of the Salamanca Foundation, which promoted the candidacy that led the city to become the European Capital of Culture in 2002.

Today, this historic building is home to the Filmoteca de Castilla y León, where an important collection of ancient instruments is preserved, telling the evolution of cinema from its origins. Many of these pieces come from the generous donation of the Salamanca filmmaker Basilio Martín Patino, whose legacy turns the visit into a fascinating journey through the magic of images.

The Film Library of Castilla y León preserves a valuable heritage consisting of films, photographs, books, magazines, and documents that narrate the history of cinema and photography. To explore it, the public can visit three specialized spaces —the Library, the Photo Library, and the Video Library— designed for research, enjoyment, and immersion in the universe of images.

The building also houses the evocative permanent exhibition Devices to Fascinate, a journey through the origins of cinema through the collections of Basilio Martín Patino. Added to this are the photography collections by authors such as Luis González de la Huebra, Ansede, and other professionals, whose works offer valuable visual testimony of the city in past eras.

The Film Library continues to expand its holdings thanks to donations from citizens committed to preserving visual memory. Each contribution is handled with special care, preserved under optimal conditions, and made available to researchers and visitors, always respecting the rights of its owners.

In addition to its conservation work, the Film Library is a vibrant space: it organizes film series, temporary exhibitions, conferences, and book presentations that turn each visit into an opportunity to discover something new. An essential place for those who enjoy cinema, history, and the small cultural gems that make a city special.
