THE LENTEN SEASON 2015 AND 2016
This calendar of La Cuaresmera and its burning is noted in Salamanca by Enrique Esperabé in his book Salamanca en la mano, in the year 1930.
As if moved by a spring, without anyone telling them anything or reminding them of the date, the boys of Salamanca, on the very day that marks mid-Lent, take to the streets, forming groups, and equipped with clubs and long sticks, they sing the popular song: "To kill the old woman / the stupid aunt"
It fundamentally consisted of going around the neighbors' houses, singing the verse and asking for food and sweets in return to have a snack. Generally, their request was granted, but otherwise, they were booed and their houses were even stoned and hit. They were usually accompanied by a doll representing the old woman, which was later hung, beaten, and burned.
This is the first Cuaresmera of the Museum of Commerce. It has been created by the Salamancan designer Aurora Sacristán.
