MAGIA Y ORO. An exhibition on traditional and designer jewelry in Salamanca and its province.

Jewelry is, essentially, an accessory to clothing. Traditional jewelry, therefore, complements folk attire, both for women—adorned with necklaces, earrings, bracelets, or rings—and for men, as it features prominently in the buttons, primarily silver, sewn onto various garments.

Most of this jewelry is crafted using the filigree technique, a method employed in both gold and silver craftsmanship, characteristic across all regions of Salamanca. However, traditional folk jewelry not only serves an ornamental purpose but also carries a profound religious significance, best exemplified in the traditional costume of La Alberca.

A separate mention is warranted for traditional religious jewelry accompanying children's garments, which held an eminently prophylactic purpose in a context where infant mortality was exceptionally high.

'Magia y Oro' emerges as a tribute to José María Velasco, the last representative of a family legacy dedicated to jewelry, who, upon retiring in 2017, donated his workshop's machinery and tools to the Museum of Commerce.
